The Roland FP-30X is one of the most searched for digital pianos in the UK, and one of the most recommended online. We do not sell it. The Piano Gallery is an acoustic piano shop in Faringdon, Oxfordshire, so this review has no sales agenda behind it: just what we would tell a friend who asked.
What the FP-30X gets right
At around £550 to £650, the FP-30X earns its reputation. Roland's PHA-4 Standard action is among the better weighted actions at this price, the piano sound is convincing through headphones, and Bluetooth support works well for learning apps. It is compact, reasonably light, and reliable. If you have decided a portable digital piano is right for you, it is a sound choice.
Where it falls short
The built-in speakers are adequate rather than room filling, so it sounds much better through headphones than in the open. And like every digital piano, the action is a simulation. It approximates the resistance of hammers on strings without having any. For a beginner this matters little. For a progressing player, usually one to two years in, the gap becomes the reason to upgrade.
Alternatives at the same money
- Yamaha P-225 (around £600): the FP-30X's closest rival, slightly different feel, equally dependable.
- Kawai ES-120 (around £600): arguably the nicest tone of the three.
- A used acoustic piano: our used pianos start from under £1,000. A tuned, checked acoustic upright at that price will outlast any digital and holds its value far better.
The quiet practice question
Most people choose a digital piano for headphone practice. A silent piano does the same job with a real acoustic action: headphones when the family is asleep, full acoustic sound when they are not. If that idea is new to you, our digital vs acoustic guide explains the trade offs.
Our honest suggestion
Before you order an FP-30X online, spend twenty minutes at our Faringdon showroom playing a real piano. If the digital still wins, buy it with a clear conscience, and remember we take digital pianos in part exchange when you are ready to upgrade. We also offer finance and hire options.
