Colour: Mahogany

This Gerh. Steinberg is an upright piano in a satin mahogany cabinet, built in the plain continental style with square tapered legs, three pedals and a brass trimmed name rail. Gerhard Steinberg founded the firm in Berlin in 1908, and the name became familiar in British showrooms during the 1990s, when the brand was managed by Whelpdale, Maxwell and Codd, the London house behind Broadwood, Welmar and Knight.

Priced at £2,395, it offers the clear, focused tone and the firm, even touch that buyers look for in a European designed upright, at a level that suits home practice, lessons and intermediate playing. The satin mahogany is a more forgiving finish to live with than polished black, and it sits more easily in a room that already has wood furniture in it. This instrument has been assessed and prepared by our team at The Piano Gallery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gerh. Steinberg connected to Steinway, or to Steinberg and Sons?

No, and the similarity of the names causes a good deal of confusion. Gerh. Steinberg is its own Berlin firm, started by Gerhard Steinberg in 1908, and it is entirely unrelated to Steinway and Sons of New York and Hamburg. Steinberg and Sons is a different name again. Where a seller leans on the resemblance, treat that as a reason to look harder at the instrument rather than at the badge.

How can I find out how old this piano is?

The serial number tells us, and with this name it matters more than usual, because the firm changed hands several times over the twentieth century and the year is what tells you where and how a particular piano was built. We will read the serial on this instrument and confirm its age before you buy. We would rather give you the actual answer than a range.

What should I listen and feel for when trying a used upright?

Play quietly as well as loudly. Soft playing is where an uneven action and worn hammers show themselves, while loud playing flatters almost any piano. Run slowly up the keyboard listening for notes that jump out or disappear, check that the tone does not change character abruptly between sections, and feel for keys that are heavier or shallower than their neighbours. Ask what work has been done to the instrument, and expect a straight answer.

How does a satin mahogany cabinet wear compared with polished black?

Satin wood is the easier of the two to own. It does not show fingerprints and dust the way a high gloss cabinet does, and light scuffs can often be improved in place rather than needing a whole panel refinished. A dry soft cloth is almost always enough. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which will lift the colour out of any wood finish given a few years.

Can you deliver it, and will you take my old piano in part exchange?

Yes to both. We deliver across the UK using specialist piano movers, and we will place the instrument where you want it rather than leaving it in the hall. We also take pianos in part exchange against a purchase. Send us a photograph along with the make, model and serial number of what you have, and we will tell you what we can offer against it.
