Five Questions Every Piano Shop Should Ask

Here is a simple test for any piano shop: who is asking the questions? If you walk in and the conversation goes straight to price tags, be careful. Choosing a piano well depends on the player, the home and the plans, and a shop cannot recommend the right instrument without knowing those things. These are the five questions we believe every good piano shop should ask, and why each one matters.

1. Who is the piano for, and where are they on their journey?

A piano for a seven-year-old starting lessons is a different purchase from a piano for a returning adult player or a student heading towards grade eight. The player's stage determines how much touch and tone really matter right now, and how soon the instrument might be outgrown.

2. Where will the piano live?

Room size, wall placement, radiators, underfloor heating and humidity all affect both the choice of piano and how well it will hold its tuning. A shop that does not ask about your home is guessing. Sometimes this question changes the answer entirely, for example towards a more compact upright, or a grand rather than an upright where the room genuinely allows it.

3. What is your budget, and what does it need to include?

An honest shop talks about the total cost of ownership: the instrument, delivery by proper piano movers, the first tuning after the piano settles, and the warranty behind it all. If a price sounds unusually low, something on that list is usually missing. We have written about how much to spend on a piano to help you set a realistic figure before you visit anyone.

4. Have you considered both digital and acoustic?

A good shop will explain the genuine trade-offs rather than simply steering you towards what it has in stock. Digital instruments suit some homes and circumstances, and acoustic pianos offer a touch and tone that keep learners engaged for the long haul. The right answer depends on your situation, and we have set out the arguments honestly in Should I buy a digital or acoustic piano?

5. What happens when you outgrow it?

This is the question almost nobody asks, and it is one of the most important. Will the shop buy the piano back? Will it offer you the value against an upgrade? A piano shop that stands behind its instruments for years, not weeks, changes the economics of your first purchase completely. It is exactly why we offer our money back upgrade option on the pianos we sell.

Why we work this way

We would rather match the right piano to the right family than make a quick sale, and these five questions are how every conversation in our showroom starts. You can read more about how we work on our About Us page, or browse the questions customers ask us most often. Better still, come to Faringdon and let us ask you the five questions in person.
